Start with the arrangement
A kenzan is a weighted base fitted with metal pins that hold stems at deliberate angles. A small round model can be enough for a few soft stems. A larger, heavier base gives spreading branches more stability. Long or rectangular forms can support a wider composition, but may be unnecessary in a compact bowl.
Five specifications that matter
1. Diameter and footprint
Measure the flat area inside the vessel, not just its rim. The kenzan needs room to sit level while leaving visible water and negative space around the arrangement.
2. Weight
Weight resists the leverage created by tall or angled material. Listings that provide only dimensions make meaningful comparison harder; look for the item weight as well.
3. Pin field
Closely set, straight pins offer more possible placement points. Check whether the listing gives pin height, pin count, or a clear close-up. More pins do not compensate for a base that is too light.
4. Shape
Round kenzan are versatile for compact arrangements. Rectangular or paired holders can suit long vessels and wider lines. Choose a shape because it supports the composition—not because it looks more advanced.
5. Rubber base
A removable rubber ring can reduce sliding and direct metal-on-ceramic contact. It does not guarantee that a vessel cannot be scratched, so place and lift the holder carefully.
Practical starting sizes
Small round
Portable and inexpensive, but limited with long branches.
Medium weighted round
The most flexible first choice for a shallow bowl and mixed flowers.
Large or rectangular
Useful when the vessel and arrangement genuinely need a broader base.
Care and handling
- Lift the kenzan rather than dragging it across the vessel.
- Rinse away plant material after use and dry the base.
- Use a purpose-made straightening or cleaning tool carefully; do not press pins sideways with your fingers.
- Keep the sharp pins away from children and store the holder securely.
